Texas Author Series 2023 Presents: John Olivares Espinoza, poet and author of The Date Fruit Elegies

The Texas Author Series presents award-winning poet John Olivares Espinoza, author of The Date Fruit Elegies. Espinoza is a recipient of a 2023 City of San Antonio Project Grants for Individual Artists and will be publicly presenting poems written during the grant period in celebration of completing his new manuscript. The poems in the manuscript, tentatively titled \\\”Biopic,\\\” explores the idea of myth-making across three generations of his Mexican American family through the lens and language of cinema. The poet will also read from his first book, The Date Fruit Elegies, a finalist for the Northern California Book Award in Poetry. He will also share the evening with Dr. Norma Cantú and various contributors to her new book, Chicana Portraits. The two presentations will certainly complement each other!

Copies of The Date Fruit Elegies and Chicana Portraits will be available for purchase through the Guadalupe Latino Bookstore and Gift Shop. John will also provide a poetry broadside free of charge to attendees. A Q&A session, signing, and reception will take place immediately after the reading. Tony Diaz, El Librotraficante and Literary Curator of The Texas Author Series for the Guadalupe Latino Bookstore, will host the reading. The event is free and open to the public.
