University of Salamanca and its 800 year Legacy (Lecture in Spanish)

Founded in 1218, it is one of the oldest universities in the world. From the sixteenth century, it played a leading role in the processes of organization of the new Spanish territories in America, becoming the alma mater of the universities of the New World. Among its illustrious professors are Fray Luis De León and Miguel de Unamuno.

We will highlight two that have marked the history: the Dominican Francisco de Vitoria, who laid the foundations of International Law with its Laws of the Indies, and the Sevillian, Antonio de Nebrija, who published the first grammar of Castilian, which had a major importance in the implantation of the Spanish language, first as a lingua franca and later as a common language in the American continent. To celebrate the 800th anniversary of the University of Salamanca is to remember its inextricable links with Latin America.
