The City of San Antonio World Heritage Office presents “Viva Poesía: Palabras, Música, y Cultura,” the official kick-off to National Poetry Month in San Antonio, to be held at the historic Mission Marquee Plaza on Saturday, March 26, 2022, at 6 p.m. Spotlighting “Eight Greats,” the theme of this 8th annual event is “La Música Que Somos,” a poetic tribute to the legends of the local music scene who helped establish the sonic and melodic soundscape of San Antonio. Showcasing eight of the city’s most exciting poets and spoken-word artists, Viva Poesía 2022 will celebrate in verse and voice the accomplishments of individuals who have moved us to dance, sing, laugh, cry, and think with the diverse lyrical creativity that they have shared with our community and the world.
Some of the featured poets include San Antonio Poet Laureate Andrea “Vocab” Sanderson with a tribute to Sunny Ozuna, Nicole Marie Moore with a tribute to Jim Cullum Jr., Amalia Ortiz with a tribute to Nina Diaz, and Mandy Lynn Lara with a tribute to Flaco Jimenez, among other poetic tributes. “Viva Poesía” will also include live musical performances by Los Callejeros, Santiago Jimenez, Jr., and Jake Castillo. The event will feature host Master of Ceremony, Anthony “The Poet” Flores, interactive workshops, and make-and-take art activities for the entire family will be led by San Antonio artists and poets. Attendees will be able to create their visual poems and participate in painting classes, among other activities. Pop-up Vendors will be on-site, Food trucks and beverages will be available for purchase. The event is free and open to the public. Free parking will be available onsite.
