    The Canary Islands Descendants Association was established in 1977 to honor our ancestor’s courage and determination to establish the first municipal government in the Presidio San Antonio de Bejar (Plaza de Armas) where sixteen families of the Canary Islands arrived on the site of the presidio on March 9, 1731, carrying a royal decree of the King of Spain to establish the first community of Spanish civilians in the area. Our mission is to encourage and promote historical genealogical research of these brave individuals and enhance the historical, cultural, and civic significance of the accomplishments of the sixteen original Canary Island families who founded the Villa de San Fernando. Our association is a completely volunteer driven organization with a 501 C3 non-profit status.

    CCDO promotes and initiates compatible development and redevelopment within the CRAG through the facilitation of the development process and the administration of various incentive programs such as the Center City Housing Incentive Policy (CCHIP) and the Inner City Reinvestment Infill Policy (ICRIP). With our many partners we have begun to implement the SA2020 mission through mixed-use projects in the downtown area, workshops for developers, concept plans for the revitalization of underutilized properties, property open houses, pop-up shops and events to highlight the potential of center city development.

    Centro Cultural Aztlan is a community based organization founded in 1977 with a mission to preserve, develop, and promote Chicano/Latino art and culture. The organization presents an array of cultural activities for writers, performing artists, musicians, and visual artists that encourages and supports artistic creativity, preserves local heritage, and makes the arts more widely available to residents of all backgrounds, ages, and interests.

    A resident company of the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts, the Classical Musical Institute is dedicated to cultivating classical music education and performance as a gateway to the arts. CMI’s future vision is to partner with area school districts and arts organizations to establish a year-round accredited institute. Chamber Orchestra of San Antonio (COSA) is an innovative symphonic orchestra formed to augment the arts in San Antonio and surrounding townships. COSA is a 501(c)(3) non-profit classical chamber orchestra whose mission is to cultivate classical music through education and the performance of rarely-experienced, as well as timeless, works.

    In 1983, Marguerite McCormick founded the Children’s Chorus of San Antonio to develop the artistic and personal potential of young people across the city. Today, more than 450 young musicians ages 5-18 gather every week to learn choral music and singing in a healthy, diverse, and inclusive environment. The organization runs eight core ensembles, one of which is in special collaboration with the Boys and Girls Clubs, as well as an extensive early-childhood music and movement program for babies and toddlers called Music Together. Through their specially crafted programming, CCSA continues to cultivate the arts and culture in San Antonio, while transforming the lives of young people through the power of music and friendship.

    A drive-thru light spectacular designed to delight the entire family, Christmas Light Fest features more than two million lights sparkling along a two-mile path under the beautiful star-filled Texas sky, as well as Santa’s Village, a marketplace featuring free pictures with Santa, food, fun and gifts. The 2017 event is open nightly November 23 through December 31. Tickets may be purchased online at www.christmaslightfest.com.     Classical Music Institute
    Established as the education program of the Chamber Orchestra of San Antonio, CMI debuted in summer 2016. CMI provides classical music education to Bexar County’s youth during a two-week program, as well as year-long outreach and continuing education. This includes: private instruction and group lessons; classes in chamber music, orchestra, ear-training, rhythm training, and music appreciation; salon performances, outreach concerts, faculty concerts, and a final concert with students at the Edgewood Theater for the Performing Arts. The CMI Chamber Orchestra will continue to perform as a resident company of the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts.

CHT is committed to exposing the community at large to this genre by performing whenever invited and available to do so. Our vision is that this music, born in this region by the melding of the European accordion and the Mexican bajo sexto, be afforded folk music status and be enjoyed globally.
