The mission of Youth Orchestras of San Antonio, the premier orchestral experience for youth citywide, is to enhance education, enrich the community and transform lives by pursuing excellence in classical music in a stimulating, nurturing and fun environment that is equally accessible to all youth.
The direct successor of San Antonio’s first community-wide youth orchestra was created by the San Antonio Independent School District in 1949, Youth Orchestras of San Antonio was incorporated in 1977 as an independent nonprofit 501 (c)(3) organization governed by a volunteer board of directors.
YOSA’s music program consists of YOSA Prelude Strings, YOSA Capriccio Strings, YOSA Sinfonietta Strings, YOSA Symphony, YOSA Chamber Orchestra, YOSA Philharmonic and the new YOSA Music Learning Center on the city’s West Side. Each orchestra prepares the student for advancement to the next level through a coordinated and increasingly challenging curriculum. Placement in all but the YOSA Music Learning Center is through a competitive annual audition process.
During the summer, YOSA offers a two-week Summer String Camp that gives students an opportunity to continue their musical studies while adding classes in music theory, composition, conducting and music technology. This season, an unprecedented total of more than 1,500 young people benefited from one or more aspects of the YOSA experience.
