City of Service Exhibit Opening Reception

Presented by City of San Antonio Department of Arts & Culture at Culture Commons Gallery at Plaza de Armas

The Department of Arts & Culture invites you to celebrate the opening of "City of Service," an exhibition commemorating the history and legacy of San Antonio’s service members and military bases. The exhibit features the works of a diverse group of San Antonio-based artists, including military veterans. Subjects of the works include the Women's Army Corps (WAC), Edgewood ISD students who served in the Vietnam War, San Antonio's military bases, the Buffalo Soldiers and Tuskegee Airmen of San Antonio, VFW Post 76 (the oldest VFW Post in Texas), African American female service members, Eric Alva (first service member wounded in Iraq, who later became a LGBTQ community leader), US Air Force Lieutenant Colonel Olga Custodio (first Latina pilot), Cleto Rodriguez, Frank Tejeda, veteran homelessness, Brooke Army Medical Center staff, Center for the Intrepid, and other topics.

Participating Artists Include: Albert Alvarez, Fernando Andrade, Lisette Chavez, Joe De La Cruz, Barbara Felix, Anthony Francis, Adriana Garcia, Paul Hurd, Soomin Jung, Joe Lopez, Eric Mathis, Michael Menchaca, Abraham Mojica, Kristy Perez, Howard Roeder, Anabel Toribio, Cody Vance, Guillermina Zabala, Juan Zavala Castro.

The exhibit is presented in partnership with the City of San Antonio Office of Military and Veterans Affairs.

The exhibition will be on view May 23-September 13, 2019.
