Muertitos Fest: Mestizo

Muertitos Fest: Mestizo

Presented by SAY Sí at SAY Si

Día de los Muertos, originating in Mexico, is a time when families and communities remember those dearly departed and honor the continuity of life. Every year, SAY Sí curates one of San Antonio’s most comprehensive Día de los Muertos celebrations, providing educational context to the important holiday with two days of unique cultural happenings including: a multidisciplinary showcase of student art, altars to honor the departed, family folk art workshops, food booths, an artisan mercado as well as live cultural performances highlighting local dancers, musicians and entertainers.

This year's theme, Mestizo, reflects the convergence of cultures and indigenous roots of our region. Traditionally referring to a person of combined European and Indigenous American descent, the term Mestizo has become more of a cultural term. Today, a vast majority of Spanish-speaking Latin Americans are considered mestizos regardless of their actual ancestry.
