Tsuyoshi Anzai: Healthy Machines

Tsuyoshi Anzai: Healthy Machines

Presented by Contemporary at Blue Star at Blue Star Contemporary Art Museum

“What is health? Health is undoubtedly one of the prime values of our lives. The word “health” comes from Old English “hal” which means “wholeness.” Then “health” is “complete and total condition” in the English foundational meaning…In 2007 and 2009, I was given a surgery to enucleate a brain tumor. A side effect following the operations was epilepsy. In some cases, epilepsy is categorized as a mental disability in the Japanese system, subject to social security. I was shocked to learn of my classification as disabled. So, I have to stay alive as an “imperfect” being until the end of my life. I’ve become unable to be sure what the difference is between able and disable, healthy and unhealthy, unbroken and broken. I examine those distinctions based on the traditional concept of Descartes’s Body as Machine through my kinetic sculptures, personal medical documentations.”–Tsuyoshi Anzai

Tsuyoshi received his bachelor of music in 2009 and his Master of Film and New Media degree in 2011 both from Tokyo University of the Arts. He completed the program at the Museum of the Fine Arts, Houston from 2015 to 2017. His solo exhibitions include “Jailhouse Locke” (2018) Daiwa Foundation, London; and “Origins Originated from Originative Originals” (2014), Chimera-Project, Budapest, Hungary. His work has been included in group exhibitions at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; Pohang Museum of Steel Art; Kawasaki City Museum; among others.
