Children and families will be able to explore the role of children on the Frontier as they participate in chores, games and other activities at the ITC’s Back 40 outdoor learning area. The Hill Country Barn and the One Room Schoolhouse are open each day. Tuesday includes the Dog-trot Log House; Wednesday is the Adobe House, Thursday is the Frontier Fort, and guests can visit all the Back 40 buildings on Friday.

Take lessons in a one-room schoolhouse, writing on slate boards, reading from a primer, and playing schoolhouse games.
Get a look at pioneer tools and technology, and an idea of a workday on the farm as you explore the barn.
Chores at the Log Cabin, including clothes washing, sweeping, garden work, churning butter and cleaning the rugs and quilts.
Grind corn at the “metate” and grind herbs in a “molcajete” at the adobe house.
Map making, flag folding, knot tying and military life at the fort

When they’re done with chores, guests can take part in frontier games such as marbles, home-made kite flying, sack races, tossing washers and more.
