Sacred Art of Altars: One People, Many Paths

Sacred Art of Altars: One People, Many Paths

Presented by Celebration Circle at Brick

Imagine…sixty handcrafted altars hanging in one large open room. It’s a dazzling display of contrasts in variety and unity. Each piece has an identical shape and the same 10” x 14” size, yet each shrine is decorated differently, in an eye-popping array of colors and media, including paint, wax, glass, metal, fabric, ceramics and more. And the subject matter ranges from sublime to temporal, and from spiritual to satirical.

Sixty of San Antonio’s most creative artists (see List of Featured Artists below) have created and donated their work for this exhibit and silent auction on display in the gallery at The Brick on Wednesday, March 19, 2020. All proceeds benefit the Celebration Circle of San Antonio, a 501 (c)(3) interfaith community whose creative, inclusive approach to spirituality is perfectly embodied in this exhibition. This marks the 16th year that this successful, wide-ranging exhibit has been held.

WHY: This show is a reflection of the growing popularity of “nichos” or small, personalized shrines, in the popular culture of the Southwest. The artistry of “nichos” or small shrines has long been an integral part of San Antonio’s rich cultural heritage.  But altars are becoming increasingly evident in art galleries, museums, homes and businesses alike, a fact which is underscored by the diverse, creative artistry evident in this exciting new art exhibit.

HOW MUCH: Donations accepted at the door.

Celebration Circle is a San Antonio based nonprofit founded in 1992, that offers a creative approach to spirituality with upbeat Sunday services, meditation circles, retreats and various music and art events, supporting the creative community in the Alamo City.
