Red Dot Show

Presented by Contemporary at Blue Star at Online/Virtual Space

Wednesday, September 23 – October 4, 2020

For the first time, BSC is pleased to share the nearly 140 artworks at its 30th Annual Red Dot in a 12-day show that is free and open to the public. This survey of San Antonio artists also includes a special presentation of the work of this year’s Red Dot Honorary Artist, César A. Martínez.

Download the augmented reality Red Dot app to your smartphone or tablet to experience the gallery spaces from the comfort of your home, or make a reservation to schedule your opportunity to reserve your time slot to view the artworks included in the annual fundraiser. A goal of Red Dot is to introduce collectors to San Antonio artists and the artworks  are for sale. 50% of the art sale proceeds benefit BSC's exhibitions and education programs, while 50% is returned to the artist. Out of care and caution, participants wishing to view the Red Dot Show in person must make an online reservation, wear a facial covering, and maintain social distancing requirements.

This year's Red Dot Honorary Artist is César A. Martínez, and the Red Dot Show will feature a career-spanning exhibition of the honoree's artwork. Martínez is widely recognized as a major figure in the Chicano Art Movement of the 1970s and 1980s. His iconic portrait paintings from the Bato/Pachuco/Rucaseries combine imaginary sitters and the artist’s depth of knowledge of art history with his lived experiences of life in South Texas. Martínez’s work has been included in the landmark exhibits La Frontera/The Border: Art About the Mexican/U.S. Border Experience, the Museum of Contemporary Art and Centro Cultural de la Raza, San Diego; CARA: Chicano Art: Resistance and Affirmation 1965-1985, organized by the Smithsonian Institute; and Hispanic Art in the United States, The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. He was honored with a solo exhibtion, and accompanying book, at the McNay Art Museum San Antonio, Texas in 2009. He has also shown at the Mexican Fine Arts Center Museum, Chicago; Museo de Arte Moderno, Mexico City; the San Antonio Museum of Art, San Antonio; and the Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston.
