Understanding Juneteenth

Presented by Melaneyes Media at Online/Virtual Space

Join us Saturday, June 19, at 7pm for an online presentation - Understanding Juneteenth. In this online experience we will be discussing the history of Emancipation Day as a holiday and how it has been celebrated throughout the years here in America.

Juneteenth (also known as Freedom Day, Jubilee Day, Liberation Day, and Emancipation Day) is the oldest known celebration honoring the end of slavery in the United States.

On June 19, 1865, Union General Gordon Granger led thousands of federal troops to Galveston, Texas to announce that the Civil War had ended, and slaves had been freed. Approximately 250,000 enslaved Texans had no idea that their freedom had been secured by the government.

We want to make sure that with the commercialization of the celebration we don't forget the true significance and importance of the holiday. It is vital that the history of Emancipation is not distorted or lost; this is why we are hosting this presentation.
