Stations of Mychal

Presented by University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) - Music Department at Diane Bennack Concert Hall, University of the Incarnate Word

Richard Novak (tenor), Ames Asbell (viola), and Joey Martin (piano) perform the world premiere of Stations of Mychal, a song cycle inspired by the life and ministry of Fr. Mychal Judge, with libretto by Rick Davis and music by Kevin Salfen.

Background:

Mychal Judge (1933–2001) was a Franciscan friar who, as Fire Chaplain of the New York City Fire Department, went to work on September 11 twenty years ago and died when the South Tower fell, the first certified fatality on that day. But Fr. Mychal’s life was not a tragedy. Stations of Mychal introduces us to a man who, although no stranger to loss, followed a call to help others first. Mychal Judge was one of the first Catholic priests to minister to people dying from AIDS. He gave tirelessly of himself to support the families of injured firefighters and police officers, worked to broker a peace in Northern Ireland, and walked in solidarity in both the St. Patrick’s Day Parade and the New York City Pride March. The cycle’s fourteen songs are also inspired by the Stations of the Cross, and the music blends popular and classical styles, narrative immediacy and spiritual depth, for a powerful emotional experience. Created with assistance from some of Mychal’s friends, and valuable insight and support from FDNY Fire Chaplain Fr. Christopher Keenan, O.F.M., Stations of Mychal is a musical tribute to Fr. Mychal and his fellow first responders.
