Integrating Mexican American Civil Rights History in the Classroom

Join social studies instructional coach Dr. Elizabeth Rivas and the Mexican American Civil Rights Institute in collaboration with Education Service Center, Region 20 for a workshop series on integrating Mexican American civil rights history into TEKS-aligned 4th and 7th grade social studies curriculum.

Fall 2021: Educated Citizenry: A Requisite for an Equal and Fair Society

This session will focus on Gloria Ladson-Billings’ Culturally Relevant Pedagogy. CRP is a pedagogical practice that encourages educators to facilitate settings where students can be academically successful while developing a critical consciousness and retaining and building their cultural identity. Also, the session will demonstrate how to apply CRP to instruction and how to integrate ethnic studies, specifically, Mexican American studies, into elementary and secondary instruction. Grade 4 and Grade 7 will be highlighted.

Spring 2022: The Telling of the "Other" Story: Contributions of Mexican Americans

This session will focus on ways teachers can regularly provide opportunities and practice for students to examine and critique cultural norms, institutions, and social systems within the context of learning in social studies. Also, this session will highlight select Latina/o, special focus will be on Mexican American historical figures, to demonstrate how teachers can use the “other” historical narrative in this critical consciousness space. Grade 4 and Grade 7 will be highlighted.
