Join Dr. Lopita Nath as she presents book club participants with cultural context for the setting of The Henna Artist, using pieces from the Museum’s South Asian Collection. Following the discussion portion of the book club there will be a demonstration of henna application. Participants can follow along at home and create their own personalized henna designs. The Henna Artist as well as henna will be available for purchase in the Museum Shop.

About the book: Escaping from an abusive marriage, seventeen-year-old Lakshmi makes her way alone to the vibrant Pink City of Jaipur. There she becomes the most highly requested henna artist—and confidante—to the wealthy women of the upper class. But trusted with the secrets of the wealthy, she can never reveal her own. As she pursues her dream of an independent life, she is startled one day when she is confronted by her husband, who has tracked her down these many years later. Still, she perseveres, applying her talents and lifting up those that surround her as she does.
