Día de los Niños

Día de los Niños

Presented by Somos Cultura y Mas at Guadalupe Plaza

In San Antonio, where the festivals began, El Día de los Niños is celebrated with a free cultural festival where children and their families learn about the traditional handcrafts of Latin America. They make books and bind them using techniques of the ancient Aztecs. They learn basic steps of favorite folklorico dances, and they meet bilingual authors who write about stories that connect to their cultural heritage. While some young people are busy involved with the robotic teams, others are learning to make an ojo de dios in the Huichol tradition or taking a turn at throwing a chancla. Every activity is grounded in culture and history and at the end of the day, everyone goes home with handmade projects and new knowledge about their culture.

Somos cultura y más is the organizer of El Día de los Niños in San Antonio. As the organizers, Somos brings together local non-profit organizations to plan different elements of the festival. Together the group plans the festival and an annual press event on the status of young Latinos. The press event includes elected officials and presents the most pertinent issues impacting young citizens for the community to take action.
