When President Joe Biden signed legislation in 2021 making June 19 the latest federal holiday; it forever changed the status of a date primarily celebrated by African Americans in the past to now be recognized by all US citizens.
Juneteenth (also known as Freedom Day, Jubilee Day, Liberation Day, and Emancipation Day) is the oldest known celebration honoring the end of slavery in the United States.
With companies like Nike, Lyft, Vox and others giving paid time off to employees and with retailers offering sales and promotions to honor the holiday, it is even more important that people know what and why they are celebrating.
