A conversation discussing common achievements in the Black Community to determine if they should be truly be seen as progress.
Join us for "The Illusion of Inclusion: Questioning the Symbols of Black Progress" a conversation analyzing progress and the appearance of progress in the Black community.
Sometimes we mistake change for progress with regard to racial equality and justice. Too many times we are excited to have a "Black representative" in a position of power or prestige even when it does not translate into greater opportunities, change in policy, substantial gains or specific legislation for Black people.
Is "representation" overrated? Are we celebrating the personal achievements of a few at the detriment of the many?
As a people who have been historically excluded from many aspects of American society because of the color of our skin, many Black Americans consciously and subconsciously want to be included, understood and ultimately accepted. We can not deny that there are times when this desire for acceptance worked against us.
In this online discussion we will take a look at examples from:
Politics
Sports
Entertainment
This may not be the most comfortable conversation to have as we may challenge conventional wisdom; but it is a very necessary conversation to have.
