An experience of light and sound inspired by Plato’s Allegory of the Cave
In Plato and the Cello, Glen Andrews II explores the concept of perception through light and sound. This work evolved from the artist’s appreciation of Plato’s Allegory of the Cave and touches upon the fundamental concept of time, the capacity of our senses to absorb and engage with our environment, and the unending pursuit of free will in the present moment.
The exhibition is both a performance and an experience, centering around a large projection of moving color that is thrown by a custom-created light cannon. This light cannon utilized a modified theatrical lighting rig to create a high-intensity kaleidoscope that allows for light to be projected through a pair of counter-rotating discs of blown glass created expressly for this purpose. In blowing the glass discs, the artist pursues a singular experience of creation and works in unison with the medium of molten glass to capture a graceful moment of time.
As a performance, the lone cellist is bathed in kaleidoscopic light, playing – in real time – his memory of the creation of the blown glass lenses that create the colored light..
In between performances, meet the artist and the musician, as well as have the opportunity to bathe yourself in the ever changing light.
