Vivid colors on big canvases painted on site depict artists Laurel Gibson’s vision of San Antonio, her paintings provide an insight into the imagination showing both the scene and its sensory feelings.
Painting “en plein air” a French term meaning out of doors refers to the practice of painting entire finished paintings outside. With only a palette knife on large scale canvases artist Laurel paints in an abstract impressionist style directly on the street. Seeing the monuments, buildings and environments allows her to capture life in a moving way as opposed to painting from a photograph in a studio. The city becomes alive.
“I love history, culture, festivals, fireworks, and community. These paintings represent my love of San Antonio! I’m proud to include our UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the Missions as well as other notable locations around downtown. I paint through the pain of disabilities and process life’s beauty and chaos within it. Each work of art lives and grows as I do. The paintings offer a glimpse into a different reality, and I invite you to see it! Opening December 3 from 6-9pm.
