Two audiophiles, longtime jazz radio hosts talk, about their individual and combined programming of jazz music, both on air and in local concerts.
RIFFs co-hosts Chuck Parrish and Brad Kayser are audiophiles and veteran jazz hosts on KRTU-FM. They highlight the finest in African American classical music available on rare, high quality vinyl long-play recordings (LPs). In Dec 2019, Kayser was honored for 37 years of programming on his weekly show, "Jitterbug Waltz." For almost as long, his colleague Parrish aired "real jazz for people who feel jazz" on his show "The Jazz Lab." Two years ago, with Covid-19 impacting all kinds of music programming everywhere, Kayser and Parrish combined forces to speak directly to each other during "RIFFs" on KRTU. There, listeners are warmly invited to eavesdrop on two friends' knowledgeable banter about discographical detail and personal experiences meeting musicians they love and presenting them in live concerts. During their broadcast, Parrish and Kayser draw inspiration from each other's selections to move their musical conversation along, just as jazz soloists might converse using musical instruments. James Sanders video recorded this simulation of an actual RIFFs broadcast.
