Discussing history and the role music has in preserving events in the public consciousness.
Anthony Prater will present a talk covering research and songs from his new EP “El Camaron,” covering an often overlooked event in local history. Prater invites listeners to explore the circumstances surrounding the case of Clemente Apolinar, the last man hanged at the old Bexar County Jail on Camaron Street in 1923. His work explores the misconceptions surrounding Apolinar and the case, including racial injustice and the social climate of the times, the damage that familial/community silence and stigma can do to the historical narrative, and the role musical tradition plays in documenting events in our history.
The event is free and open to the public.
