In this coming of age, summer self-portrait, Silvia and Beba make magic of their everyday moments on the Texas-Mexico border.
Join us for a special ‘after library hours’ screening of the documentary Hummingbirds! Screening will take place at the Central Library’s 3rd floor terrace. Hummingbirds was the winner of the Grand Prix for Best Film of the Berlinale Generation 14plus section. Co-director Estefanía “Beba” Contreras will be in attendance! With Joaquín Muerte spinning vinyls.
In Laredo, best friends Silvia and Beba know that the long summer nights of their youth cannot last forever. Their hang-out spots are so familiar but, stuck in an immigration process, over these places also hangs the constant threat of deportation. Under these circumstances, home seems a fragile concept. But the dusty half-light is also a time for poetry and dreams. Their laughter and creative expression cement a sense of solidarity and belonging in togetherness. (2023, USA, 77 min)
