MINHA: An Offering for Peace

MINHA: An Offering for Peace

Presented by Arte y Pasion at Brick at Blue Star Arts Complex

Arte y Pasión is proud to present MINHA on Wednesday Mar 20 and Thursday Mar 28 2024, at 7:00 pm at the Brick at Blue Star Arts Complex.

MINHA is a prayer for peace.

The project is a series of vignettes in an exploration in poetry, music, movement, and food, under the direction of Belén Maya and Tamara Adira. The project features Belén Maya, with Niurca Marquez, Jose Manuel Tejeda, Celia Corrales, La Memphi, Roberto Riggio, Kirsten Thompson, Brenna Mulligan-Olson, and Tamara Adira.

The mystics explained that just as divine blessings flow through the Holy Land, so too divine energy and blessings for all growing things flow through plants and fruits, which were revered by all peoples of the Holy Land and held sacred. The ancient inhabitants saw them not only evidence of the land’s great bounty, but evidence of the Creator’s love.

What if we all came to the table, and shared a meal? We might find that we are not so different.  The divine attributes of the seven species demonstrate what unifies us, as we build solidarity through the sharing of a meal and come to understand each other. In this sacred space, we find a place of equality, as we share a soul that communicates what is beyond and all around us.

This performance is a once-in-a-lifetime moment and will not be the same any time it is performed, as each piece is improvised within the structure of prayer. This multi-denominational prayer of dance, music, spoken word, and shared food is completely present and unfolds organically in each moment, as we open a space for the audience to share, join us, and make the offering for peace with us together.

Tamara Adira works in this production as co-director under the direction and mentorship of the great Belén Maya, who has been called one of the most important flamenco dancers of this century.

Belén Maya comes to San Antonio from Sevilla, Spain to collaborate in this production. As the daughter of the legendary Mario Maya, who single-handedly revolutionized flamenco through his choreography and large-format company, Belén Maya was born into greatness. However, Belén has managed to build a stellar reputation that’s based more on her own work and personal style than on her family name. Belén is a tremendously prolific artist, with work oscillating between the traditional and the contemporary, and she regularly tours the world performing and teaching.

Arte y Pasión, a company founded and led by Tamara Adira, is known for pushing the boundaries of flamenco and Spanish dance, whose mission is to share, promote and develop the authentic art of flamenco as a vehicle of healing and restoration, and the promotion of human rights and equality. The company is one of the most contemporary flamenco companies in the United States and engages with acclaimed flamenco artists via mentorship and co-performance, exploring artistic evolution and specific subject matter to elevate the purity of flamenco to a singular, sacred and unforgettable moment.

The performance will take place on Wednesday Mar 20 and Thursday Mar 28 at Brick at Blue Star Arts Complex at 108 Blue Star, San Antonio, Texas, 78204. Social Hour is 7pm, curtain is at 7:30pm.
