Join us in celebrating the release of Las Tesoros de San Antonio’s first album featuring their current voices “Qué cosa es el Amor?” with two concerts on Saturday, February 11, 2017 at 6 p.m. and Sunday, February 12 at 3 p.m. The songs from the album talk about love that doesn’t last. The mujeres The CD features musicians such as Max and Josh Baca from Los Texmaniacs, pianist Aaron Prado y más! 

This event will officially kickoff the year-long celebration of Esperanza’s 30th anniversary. 

Last February 2016 we celebrated the release of Las Tesoros’ first CD “Las Estrellas de Ayer, Las Tesoros de Hoy,” which highlighted some of their hits. Last year, the matinee show was sold out and the evening show was also packed so we strongly encourage people to purchase pre-sale tickets. Pre-sale will be available starting Wednesday Jan. 11, 2017 and ends Friday Feb. 10 at 6 PM. There will be an opportunity to buy the CD for $15 and have the mujeres sign them.

Las Tesoros de San Antonio are four mujeres who were each individually renowned performers in the 1940s, 50s, and/or 60s. All grew up in the Westside of San Antonio and enjoyed incredible singing careers regionally, nationally and internationally. The Esperanza Peace and Justice Center brought these four musical tesoros (treasures) out of retirement to sing and perform again in 2006. Now 11 years later, the women are in their late 80s/early 90s and are still performing in San Antonio and around Texas.

The women that make up Las Tesoros are Rita “La Calandria” Vidaurri, Beatriz “La Paloma del Norte” Llamas,” and Blanca “Blanquita Rosa” Rodriguez – three strong mujeres who helped build the foundations for San Antonio’s rich musical cultura in spite of the male dominated music industry and patriarchal families they came from. Even though they had their own musical trajectories, these women inspired and supported each other. Despite the sexism and racism in the music industry at that time, as well as the machismo present in their own communities, they persevered and garnered loyal fans and recognition. 

Las Tesoros are part of Esperanza’s Arte Es Vida project, which seeks to present and affirm the rich cultura and history of San Antonio’s Westside often overlooked in official accounts of the city.
