Daniela Cavazos Madrigal’s thesis exhibition, I Came From Wet, examines the illusive notion of the American Dream, the truths, and dissolutions that immigrants face in its pursuit. Interested in the history and journey of the textiles she uses—clothing items from retail reject piles—Cavazos Madrigal transforms these highly labored materials by embroidering corrido lyrics and the testimonials of an undocumented immigrant friend.
While some of the text in her work is left raw, other text is purposefully translated using Google Translate for the inaccurate results it yields. The failure of translation when using a machine to synthesize the human soul essentially results in a beautifully misconstrued series of words that create a form of poetry. By reinterpreting these narratives, her work offers an alternate perspective while asking the viewer to challenge both material and transcendent barriers existing in our current sociocultural climate.
