How to Decolonize Your Diet Panel

How to Decolonize Your Diet Panel

Presented by Esperanza Peace and Justice Center at Esperanza Peace and Justice Center

Join us for a plática with Luz Calvo and Catrióna Rueda Esquibel, authors of “Decolonize Your Diet” along with local food justice workers.

Panelists joining Luz and Catrióna are: Rebel Mariposa of La Botanica, and Ale Tierra of Mama Tierra and Food Not Bombs SA. Lilliana Patricia Saldaña, a Chicana activist scholar raised in San Antonio’s Southside, will be moderating.

More than just a cookbook, "Decolonize Your Diet" redefines what is meant by “traditional” Mexican food by going back into history to reclaim ancestral foods as a source of protection from modern diseases of development. Luz and Catriona are life partners; when Luz was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2006, they both radically changed their diets and began seeking out recipes featuring healthy, vegetarian Mexican foods. They promote a diet that is rich in plants indigenous to the Americas (corn, beans, squash, greens, herbs, and seeds). Also check out their blog and Facebook page Decolonize Your Diet!

Luz and Catriona will be spending the weekend with us and you will have 3 opportunities to meet them. This event is part of a series the Esperanza is doing on reclaiming ancestral foods.

Special thanks to the amigxs who have met to plan the series: Anayanse Garza, Beto DeLeón, Laura Rios Ramirez, Lilliana Saldaña, Lillian Stevens, Lisa Cervantes, Isaac Garcia, Jennifer Lopez y Nadia Gaona.
