TRIZAS is a Fotoseptiembre exhibition that presents a series of self-portraits by San Antonio-based photographer Julysa Sosa. Curated by Rebel Mariposa; this solo show is a surreal account that combines collected dream imagery in a chiaroscuro-style using an iPhone. TRIZAS opens to the public on September 9.
Julysa Sosa is a documentary photographer based in San Antonio, Texas whose work focuses on storytelling; drawing out the obscured imagery existing on the periphery of life experiences. Sosa received a BA in photojournalism from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with works published by National Public Radio and National Geographic. Curator, Rebel Mariposa has been active in the performance and visual art world in Tejas, Califas and Mexico for over 15 years, specializing in emerging artists and new works. Her most recent curatorial projects include Aquí Estamos y No Nos Vamos, hosted by the Esperanza Peace and Justice Center as well as, Califas Lens, San Anto Heart: Outside Looking In with Los Angeles-based photographer, Arlene Mejorado which received a winning award for Fotoseptiembre 2016.
TRIZAS is sponsored by Lady Base Gallery, an artist-run community initiative for women and lgbtq artists in San Antonio, Texas. While working to exhibit emerging to mid-career artists; Lady Base Gallery also builds partnerships with local galleries such as AP Art Lab, a space that supports “civic, social, and community engagement through art”, to provide gallery space for professional development.
