Muertitos Fest 2017: Tierra y Libertad

Presented by SAY Sí at SAY Si

On November 2 - 4, 2017, SAY Sí presents its 11th annual Muertitos Fest, a 3-day Día de los Muertos festival celebrating art, life and death. Muertitos Fest honors the tradition that ties our city to Mexico and commemorates the rich Mexican-American culture of San Antonio. With this year’s theme, “Tierra y Libertad,” artwork, altars and performances will look back to the Mexican Revolution.

Every year, SAY Sí curates one of San Antonio’s most comprehensive Día de los Muertos celebrations, providing educational context to the important holiday with three days of unique cultural happenings including: a multidisciplinary showcase of student art, altars to honor the departed, family folk art workshops, food booths, an artisan mercado as well as live cultural performances highlighting local dancers, musicians and entertainers.

This year, SAY Sí will also reveal two large-scale sculptures created in collaboration with Colectivo Ultima Hora, a renowned 6-member team of Mexican artists. These skilled artists travelled from Mexico City this summer for a 2-week residency, working with SAY Sí students to create 12-foot calacas depicting key icons of the Mexican Revolution, Emiliano Zapata and la Adelita also known as a soldadera.
