True GRIT and People of the Place

Presented by Institute of Texan Cultures at Institute of Texan Cultures

November’s Free Second Sunday at the UTSA Institute of Texan Cultures will feature two unique programs focusing on different aspects of Texan culture.

True GRIT (Noon – 4 p.m., Back 40)
Guts, Resiliency, Integrity and Tenacity kept Texas pioneers alive on the Frontier. Guests can explore the life and challenges faced with hands-on activities in the adobe house, barn, log house, fort and one room schoolhouse on the Back 40. They’ll learn skills such as land measurement using Spanish survey tools, making mini adobe bricks to take home, how to make a quilt using fabric scraps and geometry, and more!

People of the Place (1:30-3:30 p.m., Exhibit Floor Dome)
Don’t just know your history; teaching it to the next generations. Panelists will discuss Native American heritage and traditions, indigenous heritage in San Antonio and the surrounding region, and continuing a culture through shared history and values.

Panelists include Rudy De La Cruz, political science Professor at Northwest Vista College; Art Martinez De Vara, former Mayor of Von Ormy, Texas, and an award-winning historian; and Jesús Reyes, board member with the American Indians in Texas at the Spanish Colonial Missions (AIT-SCM).
