Chanticleer

Presented by San Antonio Chamber Music Society at Temple Beth-El

San Antonians will be fortunate in the New Year to attend a concert by the “world’s reigning male chorus” (as described by the New Yorker magazine).  Presented by the San Antonio Chamber Music Society, Chanticleer will give a performance themed as “Heart of a Soldier”, featuring new compositions by Mason Bates, John Musto and Jennifer Higdon, as well as classic pieces by Byrd,Tomkins, Jannequin, Dufay, and Glinka, in a program about the art of soldiering, the pageant of war, the absurdity of battle, the loves left behind and the hope of peace.  An ensemble of 12 male voices, Chanticleer will be celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2018.

Named for the “clear-singing” rooster in Geoffrey Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales, Chanticleer was founded in 1978 by tenor Louis A. Botto, who sang in the Ensemble until 1989 and served as Artistic Director until his death in 1997.  Although initially known for its interpretations of Renaissance music, Chanticleer’s repertory now spans all musical epochs including jazz, popular, and contemporary compositions.

The seating is open at this concert and patrons are advised to arrive at least 20 minutes before the concert for the best seat selection.  Free parking is available in the Temple's parking lot.
