Poetry by women of the Americas dates back to before the conquest. In the mid 1400s, Macuilxochitzin was writing her "songs" and inserting women into the narrative of life in Mexico. During the colonial period, Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz, known as the 10th muse, wrote poems denouncing the sexist practices of the time in her famous poem, "Hombres Necios,"  In 1945, the first Nobel Prize for literature to a South American writer went to Gabriela Mistral from Chile for her poetry. These precursors, poets of the Americas laid a solid ground for contemporary poets. To recognize this long line of poetic production by women poets in the Americas and to mark National Poetry Month, Trinity University will host a One-Day Symposium titled Latina Poetry Across the Americas. Funded by the Mellon Foundation, the gathering will bring Latina poets to discuss their work and read their poetry. Featured poets include Latina poets from Venezuela, Ecuador, Chile, Mexico, and from throughout Texas--the Rio Grande Valley, Austin, Houston, and San Antonio. Each of the 9 poets will speak about her own process of writing poetry and read some of her work. The culmination of the event will be an evening reception honoring three Chicana poets: Rosemary Catacalos, CarmenTafolla, and Lucha Corpi for their contributions to the Chicana literary heritage and their indefatigable work in support of Latina writers.
