Alberto Mijangos 159: A Retrospective of His Art (and Life) - Opening Reception

Presented by City of San Antonio Department of Arts & Culture at Centro de Artes

Join the Department of Arts & Culture for the Opening Reception of Alberto Mijangos 159: A Retrospective of His Art (and Life), curated by Teresa Eckmann, Ph.D.

The City of San Antonio Department of Arts and Culture presents the first comprehensive retrospective of artist Alberto Mijangos (b. 1925 Mexico City–d. San Antonio, 2007). The 96 artworks comprising this exhibition trace his artistic trajectory over a half-century from neo-figuration, to figurative abstraction, to post-modern appropriation as he mines themes such as flags, t-shirts, underwear, and Eduard Manet’s notorious Olympia (1863). Large-scale mixed media canvases boast of satisfying, richly layered surfaces, varied textures, a poetic and culturally laden use of text, humor, and spirituality.
