El Dia de los Muertos

El Dia de los Muertos

Presented by Institute of Texan Cultures at Institute of Texan Cultures

The UTSA Institute of Texan Cultures hosts a unique student exhibit for Dia de los Muertos. A major piece of the exhibit includes an Ofrenda, prepared by a UTSA Honors College class as a class project. Lecturer Alegra Lozano teaches HON3503: Dia de los Muertos to a class of 16 UTSA Honors College students, in a variety of majors.

The students will prepare an altar, or “Ofrenda,” with traditional, modern, and interactive elements to honor the cultural tradition of Dia de los Muertos. The event is open to all to view, learn, and participate.

Dia de los Muertos is celebrated Oct. 31 – Nov. 2. The holiday tradition coincides with the Christian and Catholic celebrations of All Saints’ Day (Nov. 1) and All Souls’ Day (Nov. 2), and elements of all are represented as part of this holiday’s rich cultural traditions.
