As One

Presented by Alamo City Opera at Buena Vista Theatre (UTSA Downtown Campus)

Alamo City Opera, currently in its 7th season, presents the Texas premiere of “As One,” a contemporary chamber opera that follows the journey of a boy growing up and becoming a woman named Hannah.  The opera transcends transgender issues and offers something for anyone who has struggled with issues of identity. “As One” is the hottest title in opera right now, at least among the titles written in the last 100 years. The musical tale of a transgender woman’s personal evolution is somehow right on time — an accomplished bit of art-making, with considerable entertainment value, that thrusts itself smack into the current political and social discourse.

Created and composed by Laura Kaminsky with a libretto by Mark Campbell and Kimberly Reed, “As One” features two performers, baritone Jose Rubio and mezzo-soprano Ashley Cutright, portraying Hannah Before and Hannah After, as well as a string quartet, with Camarata San Antonio performing. The opera will be stage directed by Amy Hutchinson and conducted by Kristin Roach.
