Let's Hear it for the Girls: Women's History Month Celebration

Presented by Bihl Haus Arts at Bihl Haus Arts

Bihl Haus Arts hosts its annual salute to Women’s History Month, “Fred Sings: Let’s Hear it for the Girls” sponsored by KRTU 91. 7 with some of the finest musical talent that San Antonio has to offer. Featured performers include Jacqueline Sotelo, Kara Stevens, Katchie Cartwright and Polly Harrison with guest performers Chris Villaneuva, Mark Little and others.

Jacqueline Sotelo studied mariachi in high school and performed with the U.I.W. Jazz Ensemble. She currently works as a freelance jazz musician and educator performing with multiple groups across San Antonio. She hosts “Women in Jazz” on KRTU, 8-9 p.m. Thursdays.

Ethnomusicologist Katchie Cartwright and husband, Richard Oppenheim, moved to San Antonio from New York in 2006. Katchie performs as Katchie & Le Monde Caché, a world jazz ensemble offering a variety of jazz related idioms, including Brazilian bossa and choro, Yiddish swing, tango, and songs in French, German, Portuguese, Spanish, Italian, Yiddish and Ladino. She is an associate professor of music at Northwest Vista College and hosts the weekly radio program “Planet Jazz” on Trinity University’s KRTU Jazz 91.7.

As a guitarist for the long-running jazz group, Small World, seven-string player Polly Harrison is a fixture on the San Antonio jazz scene. Polly is the 2014 winner of the Mary Parchman Award for Jazz Excellence. In a career spanning four decades, she has inspired fellow musicians and audiences alike with her tasteful playing, her dedication, and her professionalism. She resides in San Antonio (with husband Hank Harrison) and plays a 1988 custom Benedetto 7-String made for her.

Kara Stevens is a professional singer-song writer signed with studio 37. Being a singer includes being a beast on stage and Kara amazes her audience with not only her range and powerful voice, but also her spectacular performances.
