This National Park Service site preserves and protects the largest concentration of Catholic missions in North America. Built along the San Antonio River in the 1700s, Mission Concepcion, San Jose, San Juan and Espada were part of Spain’s plan to colonize the New World. Today they are known for their elaborate architecture, frescos and sculptures. The exhibits at the missions tell their history and how their founding influenced and changed the native people.
