The San Antonio Symphonic Band was created as "The San Antonio Municipal Band" in 1986, and, since the City of San Antonio had been designated an "All American City" in 1983, Mayor Henry Cisneros deemed the Band the Official Band of San Antonio and christened it "The San Antonio Municipal Band – All American City Band" on September 4th, 1986. In the summer of 2009, the Board members made a decision to update the image of the organization by rebranding it "San Antonio Symphonic Band.” The Band is made up of volunteer members and music directors who receive no compensation for their efforts. The Band performs selections from an extensive collection of genres: Broadway and film; transcriptions for concert band from classic literature; the music of new composers; and, certainly, everyone enjoys a Sousa march or two!
