“El Bosque” by Tucson, Arizona based artist team Creative Machines Inc., Joe O’Connell and Blessing Hancock, is a sculptural wall constructed of woven aluminum panels located on the patio of the Encino Branch Library. The cut aluminum panels are woven together from a collection of words and stories that grow out of abstract oak trees to create a forest of knowledge. The artwork was inspired by the art of paper folding, pop-up books, and the magical experience of reading a story and being in a new imaginary place. The text used in the artwork was submitted by community members referencing materials found in the San Antonio Public Library Collection. The text addresses literary themes such as nature, wilderness, and locality. The artwork engages viewers both day and at night when it is illuminated by a programmed sequence of color changing LED lights.
