Architectural Detailing - Installation

E. Houston Street, San Antonio, TX

“Houston Street Bridge” by San Antonio artists Diana Kersey and Bernice Williams is comprised of 64 ceramic panels that depict the natural and human history of the area. 36 of the panels depict the Gaillardia pulchella, ”Indian Blanket” wildflowers that serve as a visual anchor for the composition. The installation also includes four metal finials, placed on the four corners of the bridge. The design elements used in the bridge are inspired by symbols called Adinkras originating from West Africa. These symbols convey cooperation, bravery, wisdom, unity, and strength. The overall color scheme of the bridge is associated with Africa. These colors and symbols identify, and honor the African American presence and history in the surrounding area.
