Windows to Our Heritage: Roosevelt Avenue

Mural

1098-900 Roosevelt Ave, San Antonio, TX, 78210

“Windows to Our Heritage,” a mural series by San Antonio artist team David Blancas and Oscar Alvarado, transforms the underpasses below highway US 90 at Presa Street, Roosevelt Avenue, Steves Avenue, and Mission Road into outdoor urban galleries.

The series features hand-painted vignettes depicting people, places and historic events that have shaped the surrounding community and impacted the city, while others represent local folklore, native plants and animals. These images are enclosed in shapes that echo those of windows at the nearby historic missions and framed by graceful, flowing tile forms. Each location features unique imagery and a distinct color palette.

“Windows to Our Heritage” is part of a series of murals for the World Heritage Mural Trail. This series is located in San Antonio’s World Heritage Corridor and is a collaboration with the City of San Antonio Department of Arts & Culture and the World Heritage Office. The artwork spans several sites: Steves Avenue, Mission Road, Roosevelt Avenue, and Presa Street. For more about this project, check out this downloadable brochure.

Note: George Cisneros of URBAN-15 helped to research and gather community input for this project.
