The Kumamoto En, at the San Antonio Botanical Garden, was a gift from Kumamoto, Japan, San Antonio’s Sister City since 1987. Kumamoto, a City known for its rich history and beautiful scenery, assembled a team of master gardeners from Kumamoto, Kyoto, and Tokyo to collaborate with San Antonians to build the garden. The garden is meant to showcase the beauty of authentic Japanese landscaping and celebrate San Antonio’s long and treasured relationship with Japan. Standing just outside the garden is a statue of the late Naoko Mitsui Shirane who was key to many advancements in Texas-Japan relations, including the construction of the Kumamoto En. The garden featuring stone walks, unique water elements, granite lanterns, and bamboo fences.
