Visit The Founders Monument in front of the historic Bexar County Courthouse. The monument honors the Canary Islanders who arrived in San Antonio on March 9, 1731, after travelling from Veracruz, Mexico. The set of six statues depicts the four founding communities of San Antonio: American Indians, Franciscan friars, Presidio soldiers, and Canary Islanders. The piece was created by Laredo artist Armando Hinojosa and donated by the Canary Islanders Descendants Association of San Antonio.

San Antonio maintains ties with the Canary Islands through both the Descendants Association and two Sister Cities: Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. To learn more about San Antonio’s Sister, Friendship, and Partner City relationships, visit www.sanantonio.gov/iro.
