The Echoes of Market Square, by San Antonio artists Eva Marengo Sanchez and Mike “Comp” Arguello, is a mural series that tells the stories of Market Square’s rich history and vibrant future. Each artist designed four of the eight total columns in the mural series.

The story begins on Commerce Street by showcasing how food has always been at the heart of Market Square. The Farmer’s Market Building was once an open-air produce market. Wooden carts, fresh fruits and vegetables, and produce vendors represent this chapter of the space’s history. Prepared foods also have a long history in the location. The infamous Chili Queens once sold their chili con carne in Market Square; the chili con carne recipe (which is still a part of dishes sold in the space) honors the Chili Queens. Popular food items that still bring visitors together in Market Square are also featured. These include gorditas, tortillas, and aguas frescas.

The Farmer’s Market Building now contains many vendors selling a wide variety of items. Along Dolorosa Street, a series of toys, including marionettes, pays homage to childhood memories of Market Square. These toys acknowledge the present-day vendors who still sell these items. The stage in the building now hosts lively performances, including ballet folklorico. Images of cultural celebrations that take place at Market Square include nods to Fiesta, Día de los Muertos, and Piñata Fest.

Vibrant and lively colors make up the mural series. These hues symbolize the diverse people and celebrations that unfold at Market Square. Several columns feature black and grey portraits that represent the historical roots and heart of the space. Historic musical performers are represented in the mariachi trio and Conjunto musicians. This contrasts alongside bright and vivid colors representing the space’s promising future.
