The Aztec on the River first opened in 1928 and after years of painstaking restoration, refurbishment and renovation by scores or artisans, craftsmen, advisors and workers it has been magnificently brought back to its orginal majesty and splendor. It is now listed in the National Register of Historic Places. It is the only surviving exotic-themed movie palace in Texas. It has been an important part of the San Antonio entertainment since it opened and we have recreated the exciting movie going experience of the 1920’s with so much more. The theatre is largely remembered for its sculptures, furnishings, massive columns and murals with vibrant colors depicting ancient Aztec culture, some even complete with 23 carat gold leaf. The Aztec on the River now offers so much more than a movie. It is an experience. There is a spectacular multi-million dollar special effects show in the Grand Lobby prior to each showing of our Giant Screen Cinema films. The renoted Theatre Auditorium also hosts a one of a kind, 80 year old Mighty Wurlitzer Theatre Organ. Our special films are both entertaining and educational taking the audience on a memeorable journey to places they would oterwise be unable to go. All this on a 60 foot screen with state of the art sound and projection. On the River Walk Level we offer another FREE special effects show amongst our unique shops. There is also a coffee shop and full service restaurant and bar available with River Walk seating. In addition to the experience of the Aztec on the River as an attraction, we also offer several venues for private events and parties. Imagine holding your next event in the grandeur and majesty of an original movie palace and a River Walk Landmark.
