Core Samples

There is a theme of history and nostalgia present in the sculptures.

“Core Samples” by San Antonio artist Chris Sauter is comprised of two sculptural planters that welcome visitors to the Mission Branch Library. These two outdoor sculptures are comprised of layered, colored concrete that resembles geological “core samples” that have been excavated from the library grounds. The theme of history and nostalgia is very present in these sculptures. From one, water seeps into a shallow pool, while the other projects an old-fashioned image of the library’s name onto the adjacent wall. Inside, the theme of layers and history is continued with a mixed-media mural.
