Songbirds of San Antonio

“Songbirds of San Antonio” by Houston based artist Dixie Friend-Gay is a 260 square foot mosaic tile mural located on the lobby wall of the Northeast Senior Center. The Mural welcomes visitors in the lobby through a mixture of vibrant abstract “quilted” patterns and realistic songbirds native to the surrounding area. The mural ranges from high glass iridescent to rough textured natural stone, in the complementary colors of rich blues to earthy ambers which stands apart from the artist’s previous work. The most detailed areas of the mural can be found at eye level allowing the viewer to explore the features of the larger than life songbirds or discover handmade tiles woven into the branches displaying historical dates. The historical dates were contributed by the community and became personal markers with different associations for each person
