Avenida Plaza Guadalupe

Avenida Plaza Guadalupe

The Avenida Guadalupe Association, Inc. (AGA) has succeeded with several types of projects since being created in 1979. These projects range from structural renovations and brand new construction to housing counseling and cultural events. The story began with the AGA’s renovating of the historic Guadalupe Theatre which was later transferred to the current facility manager, the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center. The story then moved to the creation of the Plaza Guadalupe. The 1300 block of Guadalupe Street was transformed from a dilapidated area to a beautiful community park where children can play and neighbors can gather. The year 1996 saw the El Progreso Community Center come into existence from the renovation of a 90 year old building which was the first talking theater in San Antonio. Today, as a result of AGA’s comprehensive economic development efforts in the area the El Progreso Community Center is once again a gathering place, providing space for events as diverse as weddings, training seminars and debuts. The AGA has definitely made a difference on San Antonio’s West Side and is committed to continuing the struggle of bringing back the once vibrant community that was so important to the city during the 50’s and 60’s.
