RED, Ballet San Antonio’s mixed repertory engagement at The Tobin Center, conjures passion, love, humor, and strength, fusing classical ballet with contemporary dance. This program features the foremost contemporary choreographer, George Balanchine’s exuberant Rubies, a sassy and feisty piece set to Stravinsky’s Capriccio for Piano and Orchestra!
Also on the program, the premiere of The Sorcerer’s Apprentice. Artistic Director, Willy Shives weaves this exciting tale about a lazy apprentice wizard who tries his hand at magic only to meet chaos. Ultimately, it is up to an old sorcerer to bring everything back to order.
Rounding out the RED program will be several other premieres, including a work by the renowned choreographer Gerald Arpino-Round of Angels. Round of Angels was inspired in part by an etching entitled “Ronde d’Anges” by Cavaliere d’Arpino and is set to the haunting Adagietto from Mahler’s Fifth Symphony. The emotional ballet set against a starry sky features a couple, destined to part, surrounded by five broken-winged male angels. Round of Angels premiered in 1983 and is dedicated to the memory of James R. Howell, a member of The Joffrey Ballet, life-long friend and artistic associate to Gerald Arpino.
