Destiny Marie Hernandez is a multi-talented, 12th generation lineal descendant of the Payaya Clan of the Tap Pilam Coahuiltecan (Qua-Wheel-Tekcan) Nation. With roots planted deeply in Yanaguana, “Land of the Spirit Waters” (Pahalatl), with homestays in Miami, Florida (Seminole Territory), Destiny proudly identifies as a “Coahuiltecan Tejana.” Destiny started dancing competitively at the age of 5, while attending Magnet Dance Middle and High School programs in Florida; finding a love for movement, rhythm, and culture. Soon after, Destiny expanded her palette for dance by learning and practicing jazz, tap, ballet, salsa, acro, hip hop, contemporary, and other ethnic forms of dances. Destiny later formally studied Dance Education at Broward College in Broward County, Florida. While at the University of Miami (FL), Destiny was Captain of the Miami Hurricanettes Dance Team. Today, Destiny leads the Fancy Shawl Troupe of the American Indians in Texas Dance Theatre and is also a company member of the professional cast for the world-renowned Bellydance EvolutionDestiny has danced and been featured in front of hundreds of audiences around the world as a soloist, headliner, and featured artist with over 24 years of experience. Artist Statement of Work

Tell us about your work (style, approach, philosophy, subject and/or theme):

Destiny Marie Hernandez is a 12th generation lineal descendant of the Payaya Clan of the Tap Pilam Coahuiltecan Nation. As a trained dancer she headlines the Fancy Shawl troupe of the American Indians in Texas Dance theatre. Destiny is a tradition keeper in the Tap Pilam Coahuiltecan Nation who uses their craft of dance, fitness, health, wellness, prayer, language, songs, leadership and advocacy interwoven into their preservation of the culture of the Tap Pilam Coahuiltecan nation and other indigenous communities of the place we now refer to as South Texas. Destiny was featured in the 2019 NBA Spurs Indigenous Peoples Day, performing for an audience of over 3 million viewers. She is proud to keep her families' legacy of keeping the culture alive for future generations. Destiny Marie Hernandez Premier Dancer and Choreographer has been dancing for 24 years. She is an award winning world-traveled soloist. Her passion is using stylization of her classical training with folklore dances to create choreography that will heal her audiences while honoring her Native American heritage.
